SMS EHP Shines at the 2025 Innovations in Learning Conference!
Our EHP students proudly represented South Meadow School at the 2025 Innovations in Learning Conference, presenting not one but two impressive sessions! South Meadow EHP: Showcasing Multi-Media Skills highlighted their creative projects and tech talents, while The Robotic Pumas: Competing to Make an Impact on the Community spotlighted our Robotics Team and their incredible work.
To top it off, our students handled a brief bus hiccup like pros — they stayed calm, positive, and showed exactly what it means to be ambassadors of SMS. We couldn’t be prouder of their hard work, teamwork, and the way they represented our school!
Thank you Nikki DeDecker for the incredible work you are doing with these students!

Sweet Success: SMS 8th Graders Make Their Own Maple Syrup
This spring, sixteen 8th grade students at SMS rolled up their sleeves and dove into a hands-on, sweet-as-can-be science and history lesson—maple sugaring!
With the help of generous donations from Ben’s Sugar Shack and support from faculty and staff, students tapped six sugar maple trees right here on campus. Outfitted with buckets and taps, they collected sap daily and began the long process of boiling it down to make maple syrup.
Many students were surprised by the clarity of the sap when it first came out of the trees. As they watched it transform—deepening in color and developing its signature sweet aroma—they gained a new appreciation for the time and patience involved in syrup making. Along the way, they collected data, tracking the amount of sap required to produce even a small amount of syrup, learning firsthand about the impressive 40:1 ratio typical of sugaring season.
This interdisciplinary project brought science, math, and social studies to life. Students explored how maple syrup was an important resource and commodity for early colonists and how it remains a source of livelihood for many in New Hampshire today.
The culminating celebration will take place on April 25, when students will finally get to enjoy the fruits (or rather, syrups!) of their labor.
Looking ahead, students are already dreaming bigger: they hope to expand production next year with the goal of producing enough maple syrup to serve at the annual 7th Grade Veterans Breakfast in May—a sweet way to give back to the community.

District Choral Festival
Earlier tonight, the District Choral Festival brought together choirs from Great Brook, South Meadow, and ConVal Regional High School. The event took place in the ConVal High School gym and also featured singers from Antrim Elementary, Dublin Consolidated, Francestown Elementary, Greenfield Elementary, Hancock Elementary, Peterborough Elementary, Pierce, and Temple Elementary Schools.
The concert covered a wide variety of musical styles and showcased the diverse musical talents of ConVal students at different levels. The opening song was "All of Me" from A Vision Unfolding, a genre-bending piece inspired by gospel, blues, and spoken word elements. This was followed by "The Sound of Silence" by the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, a Celtic choral original, a selection from the musical Wicked, a traditional blues song, a song from the musical film The Greatest Showman, Shakira's Official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)," and "Il Lampo," a dramatic, mixed-meter musical piece based on an Italian poem. The concert concluded with an all-singer rendition of "Truly Brave," a special mash-up of two great songs — "Brave" by Sara Bareilles and "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper.
In this photo, Ed Lowy conducts a selection from the soundtrack to Ad Astra (To The Stars), performed by the SMS 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Choir, together with piano accompanist Lisa Murray.
Hands-On-Fiber Experience
Our very own 6th-grade special education teacher, Mrs. Weston, shared her expertise beyond the classroom by teaching students about wool and how she makes yarn. As part of our fiber project, students got to see firsthand where natural fiber comes from and how it’s transformed. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect their learning to real-world craftsmanship!
